The Cat's Out of the Bag ~ WIP

As many of you know I am a big fan of Julie Paschkis' art. I just finished beading Orange Octopus #2 and he is available in my Etsy shop.

Over the weekend I started beading this cool cat pillow.

I see the use of many smaller faux pearls on this one. My seed bead collection has recently increased quite dramatically so you'll see my use of new and vibrant colors there, too.

As I post this a gentle snow has begun to fall. Ahhh .... a purrfect day to craft. (Sorry about the pun, but I just couldn't help myself.)

I May Have Fabric Issues...

...and my mom is thrilled!

Recently I took a road trip with my mom who is a Master Quilter and prone to buying fabric whether she needs it or not. I am so easily influenced and ended up buying a yard here, a 1/4 yard there and a 1/2 yard or two more there.... I probably bought more than I should have, but golly! it was fun.

Here's a quick look at a couple of projects waiting in the wings.

I found the neon flamingo fabric at The Quilt Barn, located just west of Eau Claire, WI. The bright colors caught my eye and I just had to have the odd-sized remnant. As you can see, I've already sewn part of the groovy material into a pillow. I may make some coasters out of the rest. Let me know if you have a cool suggestion for the flamingos.

Also purchased at The Quilt Barn ~ Butterflies and Netting (front and back of something I'll make one day).

When I saw this blue bird fabric I HAD to have me some. I"ve already made part of it into a pillow ~ don't you just love it?! ~ But I'm not quite sure if I've finished the beading. What do you think?

And then I saw this fabric (now a set of very cool coasters).

When I was a little girl the last thing I wanted to do was hang out in a fabric store with my mom. To my amazement ~ and her delight ~ I must say I had one heck of a good time on that road trip!

Sister Elephant: Work-in-Progress

A very brief time ago I resolved to complete projects before beginning new ones. I've done a pretty good job ~ many little pillow, big pillows, coasters and ornaments have been finished. Some have appeared in my Etsy shop, others have been taken to the "real" shops that sell The Beaded Pillow items ~ (Beelighted in Zumbrota, MN and Scrub Your Butt Soap Co. & Other Parts Too in Rochester, MN).

While I was completing projects I found a fabric swatch in one of my many drapery fabric sample books. On that note I have begun an ambitious new project: Sister Elephant. Sister Elephant had a companion piece, in a different color, that I turned into a beautiful beaded pillow I named Princess Elephant last year. PE became one of my all-time favorite pillows so I am very excited to create Sister Elephant.

Resolution Update

Over a year ago I started work on Butterflies & Pearls. I knew I wanted to create a set of matching beaded pillows but found the fabric pattern did not support beads well. So the project was scrapped (oh dear...what a pun!) Mindful of my resolution I completed Butterflies & Pearls...leaving the pillow fronts bead-free and beading only the sides of each of the 4 pillows with medium faux pearls. Simply lovely.

Another project left in the closet until this morning was a large pillow made of black fabric with a fruit tree design. I decided it would make a much sweeter beaded hanger so I cut the pillow apart, took the largest fruit (an apple?) and made it an applique on the back of the hanger. I'm in the process of beading the smaller fruit on the front.

I'm happy to report that the floral pillow shown in my last post has been completed. Yay! It'll soon be listed in my Etsy shop.

I Resolve to...

I made a New Year's resolution: complete one project per week. My approach to creating beautiful beaded things is very time-consuming. Some pillows are very detailed and take "f.o.r.e.v.e.r." When I begin to get bored I begin another project. This is not a good thing as it causes a back-up of partially beaded things all over my craft room. The photo only tells part of that story, the rest of which is in the closet. It's not a happy story but there is an end in sight. I've begun to go through the canvas bins of Projects Never Finished and as the weeks go by (one at a time) you will see pillows, hangers, ornaments, coasters and more finally finished and ready for purchase in my Etsy shop, at Beelighted in Zumbrota, MN and at Scrub Your Butt & Other Parts Too in the Kahler subway, downtown Rochester, MN.

The pink flower pillow is one of my f.o.r.e.v.e.r. projects. It is next on my list to complete.

Orange Octopus! (Another wonderful design from artist Julie Paschkis.)After much surfing of the seven seas of the 'net I found him. Soon he'll be a lovely beaded pillow. My first Orange Octopus was quite popular, but alas he traveled to a new home. I didn't realize how difficult it would be to find another O.O. fabric block. I was so excited when I did I ordered two. That may be the end of this tentacled wonder so if you'd like to add him to your life, let me know.

That New Little Shop with the Funny Name

Those of you familiar with downtown Rochester, MN know that there is a world of shopping down below. For those of you who've never been ~ there is a maze of walking subways under the Mayo Clinic, Kahler Hotel, Marriott and Gonda: Restaurants, banks, boutiques, candy shops, clothing and luggage stores, souvenir shops and Scrub Your Butt Soap Co. Uh huh...You read that correctly.

I am so pleased The Beaded Pillow is part of this unique store. Owner, Crystal Merkel, says there is no other shop like it in Rochester.

SYBS Co. features a variety of line of hand-made products from soaps and lotions to jewelry, bags, linens, toys, clothing and beaded pillows.

WIP: Earl & Pearl Squirrel

It's time to share another work-in-progress.

Some of my beaded pillows have an extra-special feature: they've been quilted by Marno (my mom).

Photos don't always show the quilting with all the pattern and color so here is the reverse side.

Earl and Pearl have already had their tails embellished with white seed beads.

The tree will feature green seed beads.

I chose a beautiful mottled dark apricot for the back.

I have chosen Della's idea: Paradise Wild. This pillow is a joy to bead but also a little bit wild because of all the detail. Paradise Wild seems very fitting. Della will receive a set of 4 beaded snowman coasters.

This quilt block has been on the shelf in my craftroom's closet for a long time. Everytime I saw it I pretended I didn't. "That one looks too intricate to bead." (The conversations we manage to have with ourselves can be pretty incredible.) "Which is the top?" "That one will take me forever so why even start?!"

The other day I took a step and opened the closet door with the sole purpose of retrieving "the quilt block." Then I took another step... beading has begun. It may take me a long time but I'm going to end up with one very special pillow.

It just won't have a name.

WIP: Mermaid

I have completed panels from this story line in the past. The Frog Prince and Turtle Man is available in my Etsy shop.

It is a joy for me to work with each and every one of these; the colors are so vibrant and the characters are so unique.

Mermaid is progressing nicely. I have finished her lovely hair and gotten a good start on her guitar.

Some of the colors planned for this pillow: gold pearls, black seed beads, orange seeds, red iris, pine green, grass green and sea blue.

It's About the Journey

Three years ago a good friend of mine bought an old RV. And each summer, for about 4 days, I go on a road trip with her. Our first trip was in honor of my "milestone" birthday and we visited House on the Rock and Frank Lloyd Wright's beautiful Taliesen in Wisconsin. Last year she took me to Galena, IL and her hometown in Iowa. This year, we headed east again to Door County, WI.

What we learned 3 trips ago was that it wasn't about the destination at all; it was about the journey. Rarely is that old RV on a 4-lane highway. We take the backroads and we see amazing things. We meet amazing people and we have amazingly glorious adventures. I never knew there were so many curious sights (and citizens) in my own "backyard."

This year I took a turn behind the wheel. Since I'd never driven anything larger than a Toyota 4-Runner before, there was a slight learning curve, but the dishes stayed in the cupboards and no one got hurt. One of my favorite times during these trips is bedtime. After quiet time around the campfire, a couple glasses of good wine, some snacks and heart-to-hearts I head to my sofa bed to cover up with a quilt my mom restored, a miniature Schnauzer named Maddy to keep my feet warm and a chance to catch up on my reading. My friend sleeps over the cab. We're cozy and have great chats and lots of laughs. We plan future trips and talk about working on our crafting the next day (my beading, her crocheting)...we talk about it but never do it. We're too busy!

One of the most interesting things I've discovered on these journeys is that I'm still Me. I'm still "in there." Yes, I'm a wife and a mom and I have grown-up responsiblities, but I've found me again. And I like me. That old RV may not have a lot of miles left in her (she's Maxine, by the way), but as long as she's willing to make the journey, I'll be going along....at least for a few days each year.

Although I did not attend church today (and I have no good excuse; the church is practically next-door) I recognize that I am blessed. Blessed to the max. I am sitting in my favorite spot on my golden-tan leather sectional. I have Grandma Dagmar's blue Fiesta-ware cup next to me with piping hot white tea. I have just baked cookies and cheese-filled bread sticks. A kettle of wild rice corn chowder is simmering on the stove. My hubby's in his recliner a foot away and the Vikings are on the big flat screen in front of us. Did I mention I AM BLESSED? Let me add: I am healthy. I am happy. My family is healthy and happy. And the topper? The sun is shining and the leaves in the woods by my house are turning brilliant shades of gold, red and orange. I didn't go to church today but I am reminded and surrounded by the wonders of my Maker no matter where I am.

How Much is That Doggie?

A few months ago my friend, artist Melody Lea Lamb, worked her magic for me and painted a portrait of my little dog, Nikky ~ Very special and meaningful as Nick passed away in 2006. The photo I had sent to Melody is one of my favorites; it captured the very essence of Nick...a happy little dog who was quite content to doze while I worked on the computer, follow me around the house, fetch a toy or just enjoy lay next to me on the sofa during a movie (enjoyed even more if I shared the popcorn).

I wanted to share the happiness of Nikky and decided to create a little of my own magic with what I know....beaded pillows. Here is the first.

A Prince Among Frogs

Well, another very challenging beaded pillow is completed ~ Meet The Frog Prince....

Although I mainly work with seed beads, I had some fun adding a faux pearl here and there on this pillow (the butterfly and the turtle). I also included some facet-cut glass beads (butterfly and turtle's eye). There are a few other surprises on this special One-Of-A-Kind pillow, too.

Lovely Blue Sailboat

This little sailboat was out on the water near my house recently. I do not know the people in the boat, but thought it was such a pretty site I had to snap the picture and share it with you.

The scene is so tranquil...a quaint red cabin nestled in the pines on the penninsula. Puffy white clouds in a pale blue sky. Puffy white sails in a gentle breeze. Two friends in a pale blue boat, spending time during a gorgeous summer afternoon. Floppy hats to shade from the sun. Calm waters. For a moment we can believe the world is at peace and all is well.

On a recent road trip to Hayward, WI, I picked up some very vibrant fabric from the Quilt Loft. My first thought was to make a couple sets of beaded mug mats. Then I thought about year-round ornaments. A hanger? Hm. Finally I decided to make one large and cushy pillow ~ the better to show off all the Painted Ponies. The fabric on the back is a remnant from the Hayward Salvation Army.

As of now I have beaded each side of this large pillow with fuschia and light aqua seed beads (this took a long time, my friend!). I've also beaded the mane of the largest pony. I have a long way to go before these ponies are ready to roam but this unique pillow will trot into my Etsy shop eventually.

WIP: Little Zebra Door Hanger

Last weekend's newspaper supplement included an article about home decor and what the current trend is ~ zebra print. The author went on to say that zebra print fabrics from drapes to furniture to pillows is more than just the current trend but, perhaps, a lasting addition to a room since it is fairly neutral. A wheel turned in my head. I have zebra print....sort of...just a little bit. A Little Zebra.

The Swan ~ A Work in Progress

My current pillow project has a little something extra; my mom, Quilting Goddess, free-motion quilted the water and lanterns. At first I had an idea that I'd like her to quilt the swan, but upon further discussion we decided the swan should be beaded with ceylon pearl seed beads. I did highlight the quilted pond with green faux pearls.

I plan to bead the swan's beak, the lanterns, butterfly, branch and blossoms. Also I am looking for just the right gem for the center of the swan's eye, which has already been outlined with gray and teal seed beads.

I Love a Parade ~ Prepping for America's Birthday

With less than a month to go, it's not too soon to get ready for America's Birthday. In my family that means heading to the lake for a few days of boating, picnics, a parade, craft fair, vintage car show and fireworks.

On the 4th we gather with strangers and friends alike on our front lawn for one of the best small town parades you'll see anywhere. It's become a tradition that when the parade ends at least a dozen guests stay at our house for home-made cheese cake (a complicated recipe that I only make once a year). The rest of the afternoon is spent boating or napping and anticipating a spectacular fireworks display the likes which rival any big town's pyrotechnics. We are so blessed to have a cinder block boathouse (nice and sturdy) from which to watch the fireworks burst in all their glory over the water.

Of course, preparing for America's birthday also involves red, white and blue plastic-ware, stemware, napkins and all the other trimmings to create a festive celebration.

Fish & Fowl: WIP

My current work-in-progress is another fabric block from Tuesday Rose on Etsy.

I call this one Fish & Fowl. The large fish has been beaded with orange, green, yellow and crystal seed beads. The sun, which was very fun to bead, has yellow, orange and crystal seed beads. I will also bead the birds, flowers and leaves.

This pillow will be completed and for sale in my Etsy shop soon.

The Tortoise & the Hare WIP

My current work-in-progress is once again on fabric from Tuesday Rose. This one is The Tortoise & the Hare...or perhaps I should call it the Blue Bird of Happiness. It's a fun pillow with lots of bright colors.

This cool pillow should be completed and listed in my Etsy shop by the end of this week.

On a side note: My wonderful hubby has put desktop speakers in my craft room so I no longer have to have earpods to listen to my stories while I work.....Yay! Hopefully my "swimmer's ear" will disappear soon.

What Has 8 Tentacles and Is Orange All Over?

I'm pleased as orange punch to announce I've finished my octopus pillow. He is currently listed in my Esty shop for $75.00.....I ended up embellishing him a little more than I thought. He has a blue "diamond" ring and strands of neon green seaweed floating around him ~~~ it brings out his orange. He's a real cutie!

Orange Crush (Work in Progress)

One of my favorite colors is orange and if you stop by my house you'll see the proof. I don't paint the walls, but I have splashes of orange here and there in candles, flowers and -of course- pillows.

When I saw the orange octopus quilt block available from Tuesday Rose on Etsy, well...I sent for it immediately. And now I am creating a beaded pillow of an Orange Octopus with whom I've aready developed a crush. He's very sweet and bright and colorful; and apparently he's spoken for because dangling from one tentacle is a pretty diamond ring (soon to be beaded) for his lady friend.

Orchid is Finished

I didn't keep track of how many hours it took or how many books I listened to on my MP3 player or how many times I stuck myself with a straw needle ~ Trust me when I tell you it was many (in all instances). Orchid is finished. I am satisfied with how pretty it turned out.

Orchid Update (An Octopus is Waiting)

Growing orchids requires patience. Time. Work. Strong light. High humidity. Regular periods of drying alternating with drenching rains. Beading an orchid pillow is almost just like that. Almost. I get along without the humidity, rain and periods of dryness.

For those of you who have been following my progress with Orchid, I am pleased to say I'm in the home stretch. All the orchid blossoms have been beaded! I have the stems and leaves left.

Miniature Art Close to My Heart

Recently my friend, artist Melody Lea Lamb www.miniatureanimalart.com/ put her talents to work and delighted me with an ACEO of my sweet dog, Nikky. For those who may not know what an ACEO is, here is the definition from Melody's blog:

In 2004 the unique little art form known as ACEO (Art Cards Editions and Originals) was born on eBay. ATC (Art Trading Cards) have been around for centuries and are usually traded or exchanged rather than sold. In contrast, artists primarily create ACEOs with the intention of selling them. ACEOs came to be as a result of the public's interest in acquiring and collecting these tiny works of art that were (up until the ACEO) strictly traded between artists.

My family adopted Nikky when he was just 8 weeks old from a breeder in Wisconsin. St. Nicholas of Crocus (his official name by which he was never ever called) was a Maltese and spent the next 14 years as a much-loved member of my immediate and extended family. Nick passed away 5 years ago. But he will never be forgotten. And, thanks to Melody, I have this beautiful ACEO to keep with me always.

Melody also had Nick's portrait transferred to fabric by www.spoonflower.com/welcome so I could create and bead pillows for family and my Etsy shop.
I have begun the process and, through my blog, will share it with you.

The backing has been chosen and the first pillow sewn and stuffed. Next step: choosing the beads....and that will be another day, another post...

Why I Bead Pillows

We don't know what someone truly thinks of our talents and what we create with them unless they tell us. I almost never meet the people who buy my beaded pillows and accessories, therefore I don't know if they liked what they received or LOVED what they received or (goodness gracious) were luke warm about what they purchased. Not everyone leaves feedback in the Etsy shop and I can't complain because I believe feedback is a delightful by-product and should not be an expectation.

Today I was truly humbled by the feedback that was left in the shop from a recent customer and it got me to thinking about all the wonderful things customers have said about what I do. So I'm going to "blow my own horn" for a bit. (Once, in my radio days I had a program director who told me if I don't toot my own horn who will?) So...here are some of the nice things customers have said about what I create....and I say Thank you.

Another Current Project

You might roll your eyes if you could see my craft room; it's filled with "current projects." Ah, but that's what makes life (and crafting) fun. And when you are in business for yourself, it's also your perogative. (I adore that!)

A couple of months ago I ordered some fabulous fabric squares from Tuesday Rose http://www.etsy.com/shop/tuesdayrose
and shortly after it arrived sewed one of the pieces into a medium size pillow. And then it sat there. Looking at me. Day after day.

Finally I couldn't stand it another moment and yesterday chose the beads I wanted to use and began beading. I cannot explain the pure joy I get from beading incredible prints. This pillow is so cheerful and festive. Beading is going much quicker than with Orchid (which is still one of my other current projects.) Look for Red Pony in my Etsy shop very soon.

Current Project: A Kitten Called Ginger

Are you a multi-tasker? I certainly am. Juggling several things at a time is challenging and rewarding especially as, one-by-one, each thing is completed.

If you have been following my blog you know that one of my on-going projects is Orchid, which I continue to work on. I've also completed some Yellow Chicks just in time for Easter. The chicks began as artwork from my Biz Partner, Melody Lea Lamb.

My current project is also from Melody's studio.

This is Ginger, so named because as I was foraging through all my fabric books and swatches looking for material for the back I came across fabric called ginger.

The Yellow Easter Chicks print was just the right size for creating some little beaded art Easter ornaments.

I work mainly with seed beads which can be a very slow process. At this time I have completed four ornaments. Here you see three ornaments that will be sold as a set in my Etsy shop.

Easter is April 24th ~ my goal is to have several more of these sweet Chicks available in time for the Holiday.

Orchid Update

Orchid continues to bloom. I try to bead this incredible pillow each day. Today I finished the yellow blossoms and began on the pink/lavender ones. This may be my most challenging project to date but it is going to be one amazing beaded pillow when it's done! Take a look:

"Orchid" is coming along slowly but surely. I have no target completion date but I am hoping it will be done before Easter.

As you can see in the on the left photo I have completed a blade of grass using crystal seed beads in segments of 3 and 4, sewn into place with a pale green thread.
Part way into the beading process I found that Orchid needed to be firmer and added more polyester fiberfill.

Below you can get an idea of the very small spaces I work in...I love what I do and what I create!

History Lesson
A large percentage of my fabric comes from a custom drapery maker, Angie. Along with her drapery business and her teaching, Angie owns an absolutely wonderful boutique ~
http://angiescreations.net/ She's Super Woman...and she also makes it possible for local folks to purchase my beaded pillows. Cool, right? Angie supplies me with fabric sample books and I bring one-of-a-kind beaded pillows back to her boutique.

Current Project

One day a few weeks back I came across this wonderful fabric sample called "Orchid." I knew I wanted to make it into a pillow and sew on tons of beads. It looks like a very time consuming project, doesn't it? Well, it's probably going to take me a while, but I have a good start. I found a nice fabric for the back and have gotten the pillow sewn together. It is 11" x 14.

Yesterday the beading process began utilizing the yellow seed beads you can see in an earlier post. I am also using faux pearls in the center of some of the orchids.

Eventually I'll bring orange and red iridescent, pink, ecru and green seed beads into the mix.....and one day "Orchid" will be available in my Etsy shop. If you would like to reserve "Orchid" for yourself or have questions about this current project, just leave a comment.

Okay, I'm not a kid and I wasn't in a candy store. But when I walk into a bead shop "Look out!" I am going to have a great time. This afternoon I made a mad dash to Nordic Gypsy

Nordic Gypsy is to beads what Willy Wonka is to candy; and I'm fortunate enough to live only moments away. There are dozens of displays of gorgeous lampwork glass beads, tables of charms and strand after strand of beaded bliss.

I'm a seed bead girl and Nordic Gypsy doesn't disappoint. They carry a rainbow of tubes in a range of prices. I left with my bag of goodies for slighty more than a pretty penny and .25 in a parking meter.

Peace Parrots Completed

I started work on this pillow when the protests began in Tahrir Square, Cairo. During that tense period CNN captured my attention almost totally. I did manage to spend some time in the craft room, however. One day I was rummaging through my stash of odds-n-ends beads, buttons and charms when I found a tiny metal peace charm. How appropriate, I thought, to add a symbol of peace to my current project. And that is how Peace Parrots at the Palm got its name.

In the same vein as the Stunning Mrs. Peacock, Parrots is a very detailed, hand-beaded pillow. Hours of work resulting in a spectacular one-of-a-kind treasure!

Spring's All Over My Craft Room

Just this morning I was complaining to a friend about the clutter in the craft room. Oh, the totes I mentioned earlier? The ones for keeping my space organized? They're in there and they're over-flowing. Then I started looking closely and I saw flowers and butterflies and bunnies and I realized I have Spring in abundance.

Each one needs a few tweaks: a bead here, maybe a button there. So I know how to organize. Now I need to concentrate on sitting still and catching up with a needle and thread.

Soon it'll be time for Spring bazaars and open houses and it's looking like my inventory is right on track.

Organized Success

A place for everything and everything in its place. I work much better when I am in a clean and organized environment. My friends think it's odd how much I enjoy cleaning and organizing; personally I think they're jealous. It's calming to rearrange the kitchen cupboards and I am content to organize purses, closets...entire rooms. So...

The other day when I was at our local Hobby Lobby store to pick up another supply of seed beads I found these wonderful canvas containers on sale for 50% off. Bargain! I bought two and they are perfect for keeping pillows and projects-in-progress.

They're light, roomy and fit nicely under my work station and in the backseat of my car. Taking new pillows to the "real" shops that carry my things is easier in these totes, and they look nicer than the bags I used to use.

It's so simple to organize and de-clutter your studio, craftroom or work area, and it doesn't have to break the bank. Look for containers/boxes/totes that will work for your tools and projects and will fit into the spaces you have.

Peace Parrots at the Palm

For the past few weeks I've been working on a pillow in my "spare time." Usually a pillow project only takes a couple of days from choosing the fabrics to sewing on the last seed bead. This pillow has taken longer as it keeps getting "put on the back burner." I'm getting anxious to have it done, but, in the spirit of the Stunning Mrs. Peacock, I still have many beads to sew into place.

Each pillow I make earns a name as I work. They never begin with a name as I have to "get to know them" first. I knew this pillow would be Parrots but the name expanded as my work continued. Upon completion I'll fill you in on how the expanded name came about.

There's a New Kid on the Blog

Today has been a very unique day here at The Beaded Pillow. Besides doing the laundry and buying the groceries (Super Bowl parties require lots of snacks) and all the other mundane tasks I do everyday, I spent a little bit of time in the craft room and then I began a new business venture. Oh, why not?
Since becoming an avid tweeter on Twitter about a year ago, I met a very talented and interesting artist/woman/mom/daughter/sister/wife named Melody Lea Lamb. Newbies & Catch Up

There are some newbies in my Etsy shop. I began experimenting with (creating my own)doll patterns a while back and came up with 2 (one "large" one "small"). It's a fun way to use up my fabric scraps. I'm all into recycling. Most of the fabric I use for my pillows, etc., comes from a drapery maker (she gives me her sample books) so now I'm recyling the recycled.

The heart pillows have also become one of my favorite creations. The first couple I made did not have a pocket, but then I thought to add one so you can add a little note or gift when you give "your heart" on Valentine's Day. Of course, you can give your heart any day of the year so don't limit yourself to the February holiday.

An update on the Stunning Mrs. Peacock (featured in an earlier post): She went to live in Vermont just before the holidays. I hope to have time to create another pillow similar to Mrs. P. one day in the future.

Someone on Twitter asked me what my goal (sales) for 2011 was. Answer: to sell more than in 2010. Do you have a goal this year? Whatever it may be I hope you have fun working towards it. I enjoy most every moment of creating things for my Etsy shop; I say almost because there is the occasional needle prick (not so enjoyable).

The Stunning Mrs. Peacock - My New Favorite

Okay, so I spent way too many hours on this pillow, but I love it so much and I wanted it to be "just right." Think I achieved that goal. I am so happy with the way Peahen & Plummage finished up; the crowning touch was actually my husband's idea, otherwise Peahen's eye would not have been a little brown pearl.

Sewing Class

Today I attended the 2nd sewing class offered by the store where I recently purchased my new Janome sewing machine. We learned a few quilting basics using:

a 1/4 inch foot
a free motion foot
a stitch-in-the-ditch foot

I had no idea a sewing machine had so many "feet"! Here you can see my "skills" with free motion.

You probably won't see many quilted beaded pillows in the shop any time soon, but I had a fun and interesting afternoon; and it's always nice to learn new things.

Keeping out the Cold

I live in a relatively new house but I also live in Minnesota. This means that even newer windows can't keep out every cold draft. Above my kitchen sink I have a bank of those newer windows and Old Man Winter has found his way in making my faucets and stone countertop frigid each morning. What to do?

Among the myriad of fabrics in my craft room I ran across a scrap that was long and narrow and decided it would work perfectly for a draft stopper. After just an hour and sans beads I had a beautiful roll placed onto the window sill.

I think the fabric is absolutely beautiful.

My Father-in-Law (He's the best!)

I'm one of those rare women who absolutely adores her in-laws. They are truly wonderful people and have never once made me feel I am anything less than their daughter. They have a daughter; she is one of my best friends. Their son's pretty cool too; we've been married almost 30 years.

Ah, yes...my father-in-law. Why is he the best? Here are just a couple of reasons: Within the last two weeks he has completely transformed my work-space. He spent 5 hours assembling my new work station. (My husband and I had no idea when we purchased the corner desk that it would arrive in a box in a bi-zillion pieces.) Then he custom-built a special rack to hold all my tubes of seed beads. He even painted it to match the desk. I've always enjoyed sewing and beading but I'm loving it even more now with my new desk, chair and bead rack.

Everything is so organzied and right at my finger tips. Check it out ~~~

I'm Not Just a Beader!

Last month my sister and I took 4 teen girls to the Potter's Shed for my niece's 14th birthday. I presume to think everyone had as much fun as I. My sister chose a Raku wall vase to paint, which turned out beautifully. My niece chose to spatter paint a frog (cute!) and her 3 friends painted bowls - each very creative and lovely.

Alas, I was unable to catch photos of their work. But here is the plate I chose to paint. It is an 8 inch square with rounded corners; I painted the entire plate a pretty caramel color. Then I free-handed a dark brown bare tree and perched a single red cardinal on a branch. Finally I used the tip of a paint-brush handle to blot on my white "snowflakes." I'm very happy with the results and am currently displaying my "work or art" (sister's term) on the breakfront in my great room.

Beautiful Buttons

Every now and again I go exploring through vintage tins of vintage buttons at my mom's house. The other day I had an opportunity again to find more tiny treasures to use on my pillows. I know these buttons are vintage; I recognize several of the tins from my childhood (and I qualify as vintage) ~ they were in my grandma's house, my step-grandmother's house or in the homes of two of my great-aunts. I was so excited to come across one particular lacey pale blue button that I incorporated it onto a pillow I had already started. The pillow is finished now; here it is:

There are no buttons on this particular pillow, but I wanted to show you a new (new for me) technique I've begun experimenting with in the craft room. I'm calling it "Postcard Pillows."

I'd love to see your comments about it. Although it was very intricate and detailed work, I'm going to enjoy the variety of beautiful pillows I can create using the postcard technique.
